Today we went to the De Lorenzo Offices to learn about landscape architects. What we learned today is that landscape architects design the grass, trees, and flowers in outdoor spaces. We learned that there are some laws that apply to making a playground. Some of these are that when you make a piece of equipment for a playground, it must be 6 feet from the edge of the playground. This is called the fall zone. We got to also learn about colors that stick out, such as analogous and complementary colors, and how the are used in landscaping. Afterward, we stopped by the new Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego and had a blast!

Today our class read an article about the benefits of recess and playtime. We highlighted the parts about what children learn during recess. When we were done our class designed and created posters about what we learned. We learned so much today and we were very on task. This is going to be such a fun project! On January 12, we interviewed 1 boy and 1 girl from each classroom in grades 1st-5th. We recorded the interviews using a program on the Mac Book called Garage Band. Some of the Questions we asked were "What is your favorite piece of equipment?" and "If you could add 1 piece of equipment what would it be?" When we were done interviewing we typed the best quotes to analyze. -Talina M.
On January 6, we practiced observing kids on the playground. We counted the number of kids on each play structure. We figured out which play structure was the most popular and the least popular. We also wrote interview questions we will ask kindergarteners through 5th graders at our school. For example, we will ask, "If you could add one thing to the playground, what would it be?" and "On a scale of 1-10, how safe do you feel at recess?" -Emma Q.
On January 5, Ms. Anne Worrall visited our classroom to share her vision for the High Tech Elementary Point Loma playground and park space. The students then created their "dream design" for a playground using their wildest imaginations! They viewed each other's designs in a gallery walk and then researched the coolest playgrounds around the world. Check out the kids in action below!
On November 13, Ms. Maddox and Ms. Jacobsen presented the project to the class for feedback. Take a look below at some of the helpful comments and suggestions that students had to offer. Student ReflectionsWhat part of this project sounds exciting to you?
